Land That I Love

Today I am feeling thankful for America. Recently, Colby decided to write a letter to our President. He called me while I was out of town to let me know about his endeavor. "Mom, today I am going to write the President, I think that will be the easiest way to contact him." Because I like to support my children in everything they do, I wished him luck. This is the letter I found on the computer upon returning home:

Dear Barak Obama,

Before you try or if you already have raised the taxes think about this. Say some kids in a family and their parents have been saving up to buy their very first TV or computer and they could only use once a month because they were kind of poor but they were happy. Then the taxes raised too high then they couldn't use it at all. I have seen the rise of ordinary people in my 11-year life if you or if you already have raised the taxes I may see them fall and become homeless and me myself may become homeless I would like you to think about this.

From,
Colby J. Brown

P.S. I would like you to write back to me.

I am going to help Colby get his letter sent off tomorrow. I think it is absolutely fabulous that we live in a country where a child feels confident contacting the highest Leader, and confident that his opinion is of value. You may be wondering about Colby's sudden concern over taxes. My best explanation is, that's just how that kid's brain works!

Before I wrap this up, let me tell you about some other members of my family who are passionate about our Country. My dad graduated from the US Naval Academy and dedicated many years to the Marine Corps. As a child, I lived all over the country as well as in Japan as he served our Country. My brother, Jared, joined the Marines and served in Iraq for two tours of duty. Just this week, he arrived in Kuwait where he will be working for a company that has a contract with the military. My youngest brother, Jacob, will be leaving in a few short months for his first tour of duty as a recent Marine recruit. I am proud to be a part of a family that believes in serving our Country and defending our freedoms. I am grateful that my children are being raised in a free land, with all of the opportunities that come with such a blessing.

So funny, that is exactly what I am thankful for today! I promise that I was planning to write about the US before I read your post. I didn't copy you! :) I love his letter to the President and I love that you're going to send it for him. Liz read that the rainforests are being cut down at a rate of 100 acres per minute, and the other day she told me she wants to collect cans and get money for recycling them and help buy trees, because, "I really didn't like reading that trees are being cut down 100 acres per minute!" (She doesn't even know what an acre is! :))

While I was reading your blog I got a phone call from Dennis Oliverio - Jared's tank commander when he was in Iraq and the person who got shot and Jared was credited with saving his life. Dennis called since he could not reached Jared. He just wanted his permission to speak about the Malones (mostly about Jared) tomorrow. He said in giving their thanks it would be about Jared not only from him but his wife and his daughter.
